It was getting really frustrating though. Fable 5.1 was amazing but really expensive, and Opus 5 had too many issues. Way too verbose, confusing to follow, just hard to work with. So I was slowly moving over to Codex and Astra.\n\nAnd then boom, yesterday Opus 5.5 launched and I think they blew it out of the park. One of the most incredible models I've used. It's fast and it doesn't eat as much usage, so I don't have to worry as much about my limits, even on the 20x plan. Until yesterday I worried about that a lot.\n\nHaven't used Sol 6 much yet, but from what I've seen it has similar issues to Opus 5. State is a string, JSON object or array, text only. You name each question key, and the key is not sent to the model, so the whole meaning has to live inside the question. Answers come back under the same keys.\n\nThe three question types with their real constraints:\n\n- Noul: instructions plus optional criteria for what true and false mean. Returns one float 0-1, the probability of yes. No confidence field.\n- Choice: criteria is a map of option to rubric, up to 255 options. Returns the top option, the probability of every option, and confidence.\n- Score: criteria is an ordered array of level descriptions, 2 to 10 of them. Returns a probability-weighted value that can land between levels (score 1.05 with 0.95 sitting on level 1), plus a legend, the distribution and confidence.\n\nConfidence is not a second opinion. It is the shape of the distribution collapsed into one number, the normalised peak: (n x peak - 1) / (n - 1). Flat distribution, near zero. That is why nouls don't carry one. The useful part is gating on it by stakes: a higher bar to act unattended on a destructive operation than on a read-only one.\n\nNumbers worth knowing for jev-1.13:\n\n- 64k tokens per request for state plus all questions; 32k for state plus the single longest question\n- the state is ingested once and every question is evaluated against it in parallel, which is what makes asking ten questions at once cheap\n- input tokens are billed, output tokens are free, $0.042 per million input tokens\n- 250k tokens/sec and 1,200 requests/minute, 429 with retry-after, and the docs admit the limits are moving around under load\n- trained with RLCD, reinforcement learning for calibrated decisions, a different objective from RLHF or RLVR. No per-account fine-tuning: you shape answers through state and criteria, not weights.\n\nThe part of the docs I respect is the jaggedness page for 1.13. It reads instructions literally, negations and scoping words at face value; if you catch yourself explaining what you really meant, that explanation was the missing half of the instruction. It does not count, and arithmetic and date comparison belong in code. It degrades on a large state full of irrelevant detail, and on indirection, where the answer needs two hops between fields. And it does not generate.\n\nThe design rule I take from that: give it semantics, keep arithmetic, lookups and control flow in code.\n\nStill reading rather than shipping. Our tone guide, built after HN called some of my writing slop, only checks the prose after it's written. Nothing tells the model what I actually think, so it guesses, and it guesses the average opinion on the internet.\n\nSo now there's a voice bank: my stories, my takes, and lines I've actually typed (a lot of it from old HN comments). The agent remixes that and never picks my side of an argument for me.\n\nFirst test: Claude drafted 11 posts under the new rules, and our critic agent still flagged 15 problems. Nobody prints them. So Hemanshu and I put a compression step in front of storage in KaribuKit, the PMS behind the safari lodges we run it for.\n\nImages go through sharp. EXIF orientation gets baked into real pixels before the resize, because re-encoding drops the tag and portrait slips would come back sideways. Long edge capped at 2000px, which is where nearly all of the win is and still keeps 8pt thermal print legible when a manager zooms in. JPEG q80 with mozjpeg. Alpha flattened to white, because JPEG has no alpha and a transparent screenshot background otherwise turns black.\n\nPDFs go through Ghostscript's /ebook preset over the CLI: images down to 150 dpi, text stays vector so it is crisp at any zoom. One flag mattered more than the preset. pdfwrite re-orients pages by dominant text direction by default, so a scanned slip carrying one stray line of sideways print flips the whole page. AutoRotatePages is off.\n\nThree rules came out of it that I would carry to any compression path.\n\nThe original always wins when the result is not smaller. A tiny M-Pesa screenshot and a text-only bank PDF both grow under re-encoding. Compression is an optimisation, never the record: when the optimiser fails on undecodable bytes or a PDF Ghostscript rejects, we store the original and warn with the property and payment ids.\n\nThe stored metadata has to describe the stored bytes, not the upload. PNG and WebP come out as JPEG, so extension, content type and size all switch downstream. The size cap still applies to what the client sent.\n\nOne lossy pass over a document, ever. The API validates the type a client asserts, and iPhones shoot HEIC by default, so the fix was converting on the device rather than widening the allowlist. That conversion exposed a second pass nobody had noticed: the picker was compressing at 0.6 and the converter re-encoded at 0.85, two lossy passes over a slip whose small print is the entire point. Picker is at quality 1 now and the conversion is the only pass.\n\nNumbers, on a 3024x4032 capture and the same document as a scanned PDF: 5.08 MB to 377 KB, and 5.08 MB to 369 KB. Both still legible at 1:1.\n\nThe piece I did not expect to matter: Ghostscript is a system package, not an npm dependency, so the API probes gs at boot and logs the version. A box missing it is visible in the first lines of the log rather than on someone's first PDF upload three weeks later.\n\nHow the work split. Hemanshu set the constraints, that these are read on screen and never printed, and that a bad optimiser must never cost us the record. I wrote the path, the tests and the deployment note. None of the parameters were argued. You don't ask it to write or reason. You hand it state (JSON: the ticket, the document, the candidate list), a question, and the allowed answers, and it returns one of them with a calibrated probability. No prose, no reasoning trace, fast enough to call many times per request. Code keeps the workflow; the model supplies the semantic judgment ordinary code can't make.\n\nThree primitives:\n- Choice: pick one of a defined set, with a distribution over the options\n- Noul: probability that a condition holds (a yes/no with a number attached)\n- Score: a position on ordered levels you define, probability-weighted\n\nIndependent questions over the same state run in parallel, so you can ask ten narrow questions at once instead of one big prompt.\n\nWhere it seems to land in practice:\n- Routing: pick the handler for a request and fill its typed arguments (support triage, intent routing)\n- Select-instead-of-generate: find candidate values in code, let the model pick the right one (invoice and form extraction, structure recovery from messy text)\n- Reranking and hierarchical classification for search and RAG\n- Composite scoring: score dimensions once, let code own the weights and thresholds (lead scoring, content ranking)\n- Verification and escalation: check a claim against its evidence, send low-confidence cases to a human or a reasoning model (citation checks, extraction cascades)\n- Agent guardrails: bounded next-step selection over changing state\n\nThe bit I find most useful: the output is typed so the interface is guaranteed, but the docs are blunt that typed doesn't mean true. You still validate calibration on your own data.\n\nI haven't shipped anything on it yet. The interesting part was where the agents disagreed with reality.\n\nOpus found a cliff: positions 1 to 3 turned 27% of impressions into clicks, positions 4 to 10 under 1%. True as arithmetic. Strip out every spelling of the lodge's own name and the top band is 436 impressions and 5 clicks. We have never ranked top three for a query that wasn't our name.\n\nOpus also said the seven translations of our transport guide still carried a wrong lodge location.
